Many folks in the Browncoat community over the years have tried to begin a collaborative cookbook. Our project, Big Damn Chefs: The International Browncoat Charity Cookbook (BDC), really got off the ground when a user known as Yonukdeh proposed it on the former Universal Serenity message board and went ahead and set up a Fundcraft account to collect the recipes. Unfortunately, she soon she found herself with less and less time to spend monitoring the thread and encouraging folks to make submissions, so Julie (Julesong) took up the role as primary contact for the cause. When the Universal site shut down, Julie moved the thread over to Gossi's new Browncoat board and has continued the work. Although Yonukdeh is no longer involved with the project, we appreciate the impetus she gave us in the beginning.
Big Damn Chefs continues to grow! Debbie (dreaminaway) offered to work with the website, and together with fellow members of the now-defunct Universal message boards (many of whom have moved to the new Browncoats board), the cookbook began to come to life with recipes from fans and our Big Damn Heroes.
In order to take care of the business side of operations - financial and legal - for the cookbook, it was necessary to create a separate non-profit organization. The name of the organization is the Browncoat Relief Corps (also known as the BRC).
Our goal timeline:
The publishing plan has changed from Fundcraft to the extensive and versatile capabilities that CafePress publishing provides. The book will be 7.5'x9.25", have a full color cover and black and white illustrations, spiral binding, and the goal is that it beunder 200 pages. All proceeds from the sale of the books will go to the chosen charity, Freedom From Hunger.
The project continues with exciting growth! Shawna Trpcic (Firefly's costume designer) and Greg Edmonson (the man responsible for Firefly's incredible music) have agreed to contribute to the book, and we're soliciting recipes from our other Big Damn Heroes, as well! So the plan is that you'll be seeing recipes from Nathan, Gina, Adam, Alan, Jewel, Morena, Summer, Sean, Ron, Joss, Tim, etc, in the book, too!! We've also received submissions from prominent Browncoats such as Cedric of the Bedlam Bards, and Michelle Dockery of Escape Key, the creator of the popular FireFilk piece known as Mal's Song.
Coming soon will also be the details of the cover art contest! The grand prize will be, of course, that the winner's artwork is used on the cover, a copy of the book (which, if we're lucky, we might be able to get some autographs in), and other prizes donated from the Firefly and Serenity community. Runner up prizes are in the works, too. We'll also be needing some black and white illustrations for the inside of the book - it would be great if we had Firefly/Serenity-cooking themed illos from our own Browncoats!
