Big Damn Chefs is a collaborative charity project, a collection of recipes submitted by fans (also known as Browncoats) of Joss Whedon's Firefly television show. The recipes were compiled along with fan-made art and a few other surprises into a cookbook available for sale. Big Damn Chefs is produced by the Browncoat Relief Corps, a non-profit organization. All proceeds from the sale of the book go to Freedom From Hunger, a charity working to find solutions for hunger around the world.

It's been decided to extend the timeline for the new volume of the cookbook! While the first Big Damn Chefs came together and was put together in just 12 months, we want to make sure that the second volume is shinier than ever, so we're going to take our time to make sure it's even better. :) To do so, we're going to give Big Damn Chefs another year for selling, and instead set our new cookbook goal for 2008.
Rather than a delayed release, this is a completely new goal. This gives everybody more time to gather their favorite and best recipes together, for our editors to write and coordinate the articles and artwork to best effect, and makes sure that we are able to produce the best product we possibly can.
Thank you to everybody who has sent in their recipes and articles! We need your submissions to succeed, and we need even more from more Browncoats the world wide. So get out there and spread the word. :) Tell all your Browncoat friends about this worthy cause, show off your cookbooks to friends and family, and wear your Big Damn Chefs tshirts and buttons! :)

February 8, 2007 - Press Release
Seattle, WA, February 8, 2007: The non-profit corporation which produced the original Browncoat cookbook, Browncoat Relief Corps (also known as the BRC), is working on coordinating the sequel volume, draft titled Big Damn Chefs Rise Again. The cookbook is a collaborative charity project, a collection of recipes submitted by fans (also known as Browncoats) and the cast/crew of Joss Whedon's Firefly television show and the movie Serenity. The success of the original volume was very rewarding, and the BRC believes a second volume will be equally as welcome in the Firefly and Serenity community and will bring the selling goal of three-hundred and thirty copies nearer to fruition. The admirable recipient of the funds raised by the sale of the cookbooks, Freedom From Hunger (www.FreeFromHunger.org), is also excited by the prospect of another collaborative volume, and both they and the BRC are eager to work on the new book so that sales can begin and the funding goals can be met and exceeded!
Submission of recipes and other materials are encouraged from all members of the Browncoat community, including the cast and crew of the television show and movie.
More and detailed information available in the Full Press Release.

We're pleased to announce that, yes, there is a sequel planned for Big Damn Chefs! The date for the official opening of recipe submissions for the next installment of the Browncoat cookbook is March 1, 2007. So get your recipes ready, gang. :) Please take a moment to read over the submissions guidelines, too. It works well for us if you "browncoat-ify" them when you send them in, both recipe titles and directions. Just make sure that the directions are still easily followed, and try to avoid vulgarities (unless they're in Chinese, eh?).
We'd also like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who contributed to the successful first Big Damn Chefs project - we couldn't have done it without you!
The sponsors of the Cover Art Contest
The Big Damn Artists who submitted their artwork for the Cover Art Contest, and the winners!
Winners of the contest:
- Bill Mudron
- Michelle Dockrey
- Ben Mund
- Patrish Dehler
The shiny Big Damn Heroes and "Heroes By Association" who submitted recipes for the cookbook:
Freedom From Hunger - Big Damn Chef's charity of choice, who continue to guide and support hardworking women all around the world, enabling them to win life-saving victories against chronic hunger and build healthy lives for their children and families.
And last, but far from least, all the Browncoats who contributed recipes and supported us through the endeavor, and all the Browncoats who've purchased their copies of the cookbook!
A note from Editor Julie Rampke: there were and are so many people behind the scenes involved with the project that I must thank...
- The Board of Directors of the Browncoat Relief Corps: Judy Oxford, Kandi Long, Christopher Oxford, and Jeri Lynn Cornish.
- The Editorial Board for Big Damn Chefs: Gene Breshears, James Hazlerig, Mary Sisson, Kristin Fontaine, Krista Duncan, and Debbie Edwards
- My mother, Ann Monnier, who spent the time with me as a child in the kitchen, teaching me the building blocks of cooking which I still use to this day.
- My father, Dick Rampke, who taught me how to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich.
- My husband, Mike, who put up with the long days and nights of research, writing, and beer the book required. Please note: the beer is no longer required nor sought after, thank goodness.
- Mu Press, who donated much-needed resources.
- Other friends/co-workers/bosses who listened to me babble endlessly about the project… Darrell, Gabe, DJ, Emiel, Karen.
To all of you - our unending thanks!
