Recipe Submissions

(Click here for news about the extended submission timeline!)

Do you have a recipe that you'd like to share with other Browncoats? Send it in! Beginning March 1, 2007, we're accepting all kinds of recipes, and as many as you'd like to share. Our current deadline for recipe submissions is Sunday June 15, 2008. We'd like to have the book ready and available for Comic-Con International 2008 and the 2nd annual Browncoat Cruise (Dec. 2008), should it occur. Best of all, the Big Damn Chefs sequel (draft title: Big Damn Chefs Rise Again) will be ready for the 2008 holiday season for you to use in your gift giving!

Please include the following information:

  1. Your name (this will be printed in the book, so first, last, or a nickname, whatever you feel comfortable with).
  2. The area in which you live (to show the diversity of our community).
  3. The recipe, and any comments/notes about it (to personalize it!). It works well for us if you "browncoat-ify" your recipe, both recipe titles and directions. Just make sure that the directions are still easily followed, and try to avoid vulgarities (unless they're in Chinese, eh?). :)
  4. If possible, include measurements in both American standard and metric (for our international Browncoat friends). A useful tool for converting is available at RecipeZaar: http://www.recipezaar.com/library/calc.zsp.
  5. Important Notes: We cannot accept completely anonymous submissions. If the recipe is from a book, please re-write the directions in your own words, include any changes you make (and who doesn't change a recipe?) and, preferably, create your own recipe title. (For more information, refer to US Copyright FL-122 at http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl122.html.) We cannot accept recipes which are not yours which have not been re-written (such as Nathan Fillion's Bean Dip recipe which was published in Lux Lucre's Browncoat Guidebook).

And send them to us at: submissions@bigdamnchefs.com

Note: Everyone is encouraged to submit as many recipes as they'd like. However, if the response turns out to be more overwhelming than we anticipate, we may not be able to include every recipe, for the sake of keeping the book's price and size reasonable.

Artwork Submissions

We are accepting submissions of artwork for the interior of the cookbook. The illustrations need to be pen and ink artwork, of the equivalent produced digitally, in black and white and/or greyscale. We prefer to receive submissions digitally, but if necessary we can receive hardcopy artwork and scan it for inclusion in the book.

Subject material is the same as for recipes: Firefly, Serenity, and food. We need full, half, and quarter page filler artwork. Some good Firefly-based "dingbats" would also be appreciated to use as dividers in different areas.

What the submitted artwork canNOT contain: any images whose copyright legally belongs to Mutant Enemy, Fox Network, Universal Pictures, or anybody other than yourself.

You might have questions about images, considering some of designs you've seen for sale on materials in other shops at CafePress. Although CafePress seems to be letting some of those slide by, for the meantime, they have many times in the past to our knowledge shut down various Firefly/Serenity based stores they felt were a violation of copyright and/or the CafePress Shopkeeper Agreement, Intellectual Property Rights Policy, and Copyright, Trademark and Intellectual Property Guidelines. Not only do we need be concerned about CafePress, we have to worry about Fox, et all, finding the project in violation of copyright. This is a charity project, raising funds for a very worthy cause, and it would be a shame to find ourselves mired in red tape and unable to sell the books and raise funds.

CafePress guidelines say: "NO photos, logos, caricatures, or other artwork depicting celebrities, such as Michael Jackson or Madonna, or other third parties. Just because you take a photograph of a celebrity does not give you the right to use that photograph on merchandise, even if you digitally manipulate the photograph."

Therefore, our project guidelines are that artwork for the cookbook will not contain any images of characters from the show Firefly or movie Serenity.

Examples of images which may be used:

You may send them to us as attachments at: submissions@bigdamnchefs.com. It would be helpful if you first sent an introductory note to the email address to let us know to expect attachments in furture emails from you, thanks!
